Screen recorder · v0.2.1

On Air

Record your screen. Not your controls.

A small Windows screen recorder: a whole screen, one window or an area you drag out, to MP4 with your mic, computer sound and a webcam bubble. The control bar sits on your screen and never shows up in the video.

The story

Every recording had the recorder in it.

Recording a quick walkthrough meant either filming the recorder's own toolbar or hunting for it under other windows. I wanted controls I could see and the video couldn't.

On Air's bar floats on your screen and is invisible to every capture. From there it grew Clips for games, transcripts made on your own PC, and trims that take no time at all.

What it does

Everything a quick recording needs.

For the recording you send a colleague, the walkthrough for a customer, and the moment in a game you wish you'd caught.

  • Screen, window or area

Pick a source and record after a 3-2-1 countdown, or press Ctrl+Alt+R from anywhere. Pause, resume or start over.

  • Controls that stay off camera

The bar is visible to you and invisible to the recording. Clicks pass straight through it to whatever's behind.

  • Clips

Keeps the last few minutes of your screen. Ctrl+Alt+C saves a clip from any game, with a chime instead of a pop-up.

  • Clear sound

Computer sound and your mic, with background-noise removal and an automatic level that lifts a quiet voice.

  • Webcam bubble and window inlay

A camera bubble that snaps to any corner, and a live picture of another window in a corner.

  • Draw and show clicks

Draw over the screen while you record. A red ripple marks each click, in the video only.

  • Transcripts on your PC

Speech becomes captions and text without anything leaving your PC. Search what was said, fix a word, or keep only the lines you pick.

  • Trim and captions

Trim instantly with no loss in quality, or save a copy with the captions burned in for any chat app.

  • Works on your graphics card

Finds a graphics card that records reliably on your PC, and falls back gracefully if none do.

Behind the build

Capture, compose, encode, save.

  1. CaptureGrabs the screen and sound straight from Windows.
  2. ComposeCrops to your area and adds click ripples and drawing.
  3. EncodeCompresses the video on your graphics card.
  4. SaveWrites an MP4 that still plays even if the app crashes.

Highlights

  • Invisible controls

One Windows setting hides the bar from every screen capture while it stays on your screen, and clicks pass through everywhere except the buttons.

  • Clips at about 1% CPU

Instead of recording twice, On Air keeps the last few minutes as short, ready-made pieces and joins them when you save, so a clip is instant.

  • Graphics cards that misbehave

Some drivers accept video and never hand it back. On Air tests each card once, remembers which ones work, and quietly uses one that does.
